Top 5 Reasons to Join our CSA
At Tierra Vida Farm, we survey our CSA customers to find out what it is about our CSA that keeps them coming back year after year. In addition, we conduct annual in-person interviews with a handful of our members in order to dive deeper into what works for them and why. Our customers routinely talk about the same handful of things which we consider the top 5 reasons to join our CSA.
1. Taste
Industrial agriculture has focused its time and energy on growing food that is disease resistant, looks good, has a high yield, and is easy to transport. However, as it got better at those things, taste (and nutrient density) was sadly left behind. We hear time and time again, "I had no idea ___________ could taste so good." Also, kids routinely tell us that "Farmer Daniel" carrots are the best!
2. Freshness
Have you ever bought salad greens at the supermarket that looked fine and then rotted in your refrigerator two days later? We're guessing the answer is YES and you are not alone. Our salad greens (and produce in general) have been known to stay fresh for more than a month for a couple of reasons: you get them within a day or two of harvest and they are refrigerated until you pick them up.
3. Cleanliness
You're busy ... we get that. The last thing you have time to do is scrub dirt covered vegetables. Although we do recommend that you wash our produce before consumption we do the initial washing for you. It's our job to make sure that your vegetables, whether salad mix or carrots, are pretty darn clean when you get them. That way, all you have to do is give them a quick rinse before cooking.
4. Value
Our CSA members understand that our quality (taste, freshness, and nutrient density) cannot be purchased at a commercial grocery store ... even if they're buying organic. Although they could purchase cheaper vegetables at the supermarket they do not feel like ours are expensive. Rather, they routinely comment on the quantity of vegetables they receive weekly and how they never feel gypped.
5. Relationship
Our customers describe the ability to shake their farmers hand, tour the fields where their food is grown, and have their kids pet baby goats & feed carrots to horses as bonuses. In addition, our presence at CSA drop off locations plus weekly outreach and education via a newsletter and Facebook page enhance the relationship and sense of community for all of us.
